This program has been established to support the recruitment and development of school leavers within a chosen technical field within the Parks and Gardens Branch at Sunshine Coast Council.

Students will gain insight into the various Parks and Gardens related professions whilst being provided with opportunities to experience first-hand basic technical skills within their chosen field/s:

  • Horticulture – General garden duties such as mulching, pruning, planting, rubbish collection
  • Arboriculture – General labouring duties, pruning techniques, general tree knowledge, tree identification
  • Turf and Irrigation – Soil testing, estimates, integrated pest management
  • Nursery Operations – Soil Management, seedling control, planting procedures, use of fertilizers and pest control
  • Infrastructure Maintenance – Infrastructure maintenance and routine inspections
  • Administration – General office duties such as organisational skills, time management, taking meeting minutes and working within Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel

Work experience helps students make informed decisions about their future and provides an opportunity to explore potential careers.

The Parks and Gardens High School Work Experience Program provides a voluntary, unpaid, short-term arrangement for enrolled high school students to gain knowledge, experience, and participate in Council’s important community volunteer work.

Eligibility

Those eligible for this program are:

  • A secondary school student in grade 10, 11 or 12 (minimum age requirement 14 years at time of placement)
  • Enrolled in a school within the Sunshine Coast area

Placement Information & Requirements

  • Placement will be a period of 5 days
  • Students can choose 2 x fields to gain work experience within the 5 day period
  • Correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn during the period of the program – this will be provided
  • Students need to be covered for public liability and personal accident insurance by a recognised educational institution

This program will also provide practical experience including developing transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, understanding how the Parks and Gardens Branch operates and building interpersonal skills and confidence.
