The Parks and Gardens Work Experience Program offers secondary students the chance to explore career pathways within Sunshine Coast Council’s Parks and Gardens Branch. This program supports local school leavers by introducing them to technical skills and practical tasks across a range of outdoor and administrative fields.
During the placement, students will gain real-world insight into day‑to‑day work across Parks and Gardens while developing foundational skills in their chosen areas of interest. Students may experience:

Available Work Experience Fields:
**
Horticulture – Assist with mulching, pruning, planting, and general garden care.
Turf & Irrigation – Learn soil testing, estimation processes, and integrated pest management.
Nursery Operations – Support soil preparation, seedling care, planting techniques, and correct use of fertilisers and pest control.
Infrastructure Maintenance – Help with routine inspections and maintaining park infrastructure.
Administration – Build office skills including organisation, time management, minute‑taking, and working with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Work experience allows students to explore potential career paths, build confidence, and make informed decisions about their future.
**Eligibility
**
Those eligible for this program are:
- Currently enrolled in Years 9–12 (minimum age 14 at time of placement)
- Attending a school within the Sunshine Coast area
**Placement Information & Requirements
**
- Work experience opportunities run February to September
- Placements run for 5 consecutive days
- Students may select two fields to rotate through during the week
- Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn*
- Students must be covered by their school's public liability and personal accident insurance*
*It is the students’ responsibility to provide all requested special requirements.
This program also helps build transferable skills including teamwork, communication, problem‑solving, and understanding how the Parks and Gardens Branch operates.
