Our Work Experience Program

Council’s work experience program provides students with the chance to gain on-the-job experience to complement their study.

Work experience helps students make informed decisions about their future and provides an opportunity to explore potential careers.

There is a diverse range of work experience opportunities at Council. If you would like to get involved, you can express your interest by submitting an application.

Eligibility

Those eligible for the Work Experience program are:

  • a secondary school student who is at least 14 years old;
  • a student studying a Certificate III or above with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO);
  • a University student.

Work experience placement requests must be linked to course requirements or school career education programs.

Students need to be covered for public liability and personal accident insurance by a recognised educational institution.

Due to the high volume of applications received, preference is given to schools and institutions within the Sunshine Coast area and to students residing on the Sunshine Coast.

General Placement Information

Placement duration is dependent on the type of student:

  • High School – 5 days
  • Vocational / Registered Training Organisation (RTO) - 40 hours (5 x 8 hour days)
  • University – 96 hours (12 x 8 hour days).

Council covers a broad range of work experience interests, and openings are dependent on business needs and the capacity of the relevant business area.

Work experience placements are unpaid. It is the students’ responsibility to arrange their own transport to and from the placement location.

Special Requirements

Some roles have special requirements such as the General Construction Induction (White) card, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or Working With Children (Blue) card.  It is the students’ responsibility to provide all requested special requirements.

How to apply

Click “Apply now” to complete the application form. To be considered for any work experience opportunities, you will need to upload a resume and 1-page cover letter.

Please note this is an expression of interest only, and not an application for a specific placement. Council will be in contact if a suitable placement arises.
