About the Role

Design and Placemaking Services sits within Council’s Infrastructure & Natural Assets Department and provides expert civil and urban design solutions that support liveable, connected and sustainable communities. The Branch plays a critical role in translating strategic plans into buildable, high-quality capital works projects, working collaboratively across disciplines to deliver outcomes that balance growth, safety, environmental responsibility and placemaking excellence.

As a Civil Designer, you will contribute to the planning and delivery of Council’s Capital Works Program through the production and review of civil designs, cost estimates and construction documentation. Working closely with engineers, senior designers and stakeholders, this role offer is responsible for providing coordinated expert solutions in the planning, development, and delivery of designs to facilitate ongoing management of our civil assets that will support and align to council’s vision. The role provides exposure to a wide range of urban and rural road infrastructure projects, with scope to grow from supported design delivery at Level 4 to greater autonomy and delivery of more complex projects at Level 5.

Primarily you will;

  • Assist Design Engineers and the Design Services Supervisor with: The delivery of basic cost-effective civil designs with the application of relevant established guidelines or guidance from Senior Designers and Engineers, including construction documentation for the council’s endorsed Capital Works Program.
  • Project reviews internal and external of both urban and rural road designs, cost estimates, drafting and documentation.
  • Undertake key design functions including:
  • Investigating, researching, analysing, assessing information to determine and/or   recommend appropriate course of action that would be compliant with relevant codes.
  • Technical investigations, analysis and preparation of advice, recommendations or reports of a sensitive or political nature requiring application of established principles, techniques and methods to achieve business unit’s results.
  • Working autonomously to engage with relevant stakeholders to collate, prepare or achieve project outcomes.
  • Document design decisions and complete the Design Quality Management System.
  • Plan and organise own work which may span more than one discipline.

About you

You’ll be a critical thinker and hold a strong analytical aptitude. You’ll be reliable, and a team player with communication skills of a high standard. You will also have a high attention to detail and professionalism when undertaking tasks of the role.

Additionally, you will have an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) as well as have relevant experience in the field of urban and rural roads and civil design.

You can apply knowledge of relevant urban and rural road design guidelines and standards including Austroads, Transport and Main Roads Standards, Australian Standards and QUDM,

You are competent using computer software for the design of urban and rural roads solutions, including AutoCAD and 12d model.
